New Kentucky Chapter of Horses For Heroes

October 15, 2010 - The Horses for Heroes program seeks to help veterans suffering from illnesses like post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression through alternative therapy. They provide therapeutic horse riding as well as various equine-assisted services. It only seems natural, then, that there be a chapter of the Horses for Heroes program in Kentucky, the "Horse Capital of the World." The Kentucky chapter will be hosted at the Central Kentucky Riding for Hope (CKRH) at the Kentucky Horse Park.

The new Kentucky pilot program chapter is launching courtesy of a $500,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) as well as $60,000 from AT&T. The program is operated in conjunction with the Lexington Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center.

Veterans suffering from depression and PTSD following a combat deployment is not unusual. Reports as to how many Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffer from these two ailments vary, but one study placed the number 1 in 5. A clinical trial named "Effectiveness of Equine-Assisted Experimental Therapy" found participants detailed not only reduced amounts of psychological suffering, but increased feelings of personal contentment.

Horses for Heroes couples equine based therapy with mental health counseling in a completely equine environment with support from other veterans. The program has seen success in other states and generally improves veteran-participants' personal well-being.

The initial class will start in November and will consist of 4 veterans. The Lexington VA Medical Center will supply personnel for the program so they may assist the veterans while scrutinizing the program's usefulness. They will also refer veterans to the program.
