New Legislation Would Provide ID Cards For All Veterans

Army veterans U.S. Reps Todd Akin (R-Mo.) and Silvestre Reyes (D-Tx) both serve in the House of Representatives and according to an article in The Navy Times recently introduced the Veterans ID Card Act (HR 2985), which, if passed, would provide a method of status identification for people:

·      who did not retire from the military;

·      who do not draw Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health benefits; and

·      who have identification issued by the Department of Defense (DoD).

The identification would be used by veterans who served in the military but did not retire from the military. The VA would provide the photo ID cards to any eligible veteran seeking one. There would be a cost involved for the veteran, however, which may be the only way this bill could pass.

The amount of that fee, however, would be determined at a later date. In order to keep that fee as low as possible, the bill would allow the card to contain certain advertisements.

The card could be used in numerous situations, which range from drawing veterans discounts at stores to proving status to employers. The ID card would be much more convenient than carrying around a DD 214, which includes veterans' Social Security number.
