Oral cancer can lead to an individual being unable to work while they are undergoing treatment and recovery. The financial burden can be alleviated by applying for long-term disability benefits.
Now researchers from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust are developing a new oral cancer test that may save lives.
Early detection is vital in patients facing a prognosis of cancer. When cancer is detected early, there is a 5 year survival rate of more than 90%. However when it is not found early the survival rate is reduced to just 50%.
Currently, oral cancer is found by a biopsy using a scalpel, which is a time-consuming procedure. It can take a week or longer before final results come back.
This new test would take less than 20 minutes and requires a simple brushing of cells. The cells would then be transferred onto a chip, which is analyzed. Within just 8 to 10 minutes the results will show.
Clinical trials on patients have begun, with the hope that this could lead to easier detection of what can be a deadly cancer.
If you are suffering from oral cancer or any other type of severe mental or physical disability, you should contact a long-term disability lawyer who can help determine if you are eligible for long-term disability benefits.
