September 28, 2010 - Sharing health care information is one of the hottest topics facing the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) these days. Getting health information online and secure is a goal shared by the VA and the Department of Defense (DoD). A new VA pilot program in Spokane, Washington will hopefully progress the portability of health care information for veterans and active-duty soldiers. The pilot program will be operative through 2012.
The partnership will be between the Spokane VA Medical Center and Fairchild Air Force Base with Inland Northwest Health Services (INHS). INHS is an information exchange service used when secure transferring of electronic health information is necessary. The information is transferred across a Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIN) in an effort to advance the establishment of the DoD's Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER).
The Spokane pilot program will connect 38 hospitals and medical facilities. All physicians and providers tied into those facilities will be able to access patient information on the secured network. The network services around 3.5 million electronic medical records through over 4,000 physicians and an additional 450 clinics and private physician offices.
The VA is inviting Veterans currently receiving health care from the VA and certain other providers in the area to become part of the pilot program. The NHIN is operated by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services. It establishes and provides the standards, conditions, and guiding principles allowing all the medical establishments to securely share health information. According to the VA, sharing information in this manner diminishes unnecessary testing, and increases the efficiency of provided health care.
Soldiers can return home with a number of conditions, injuries, and aggravated preexisting conditions. If you believe you have a service-connected physical or psychological injury you may be entitled to Veterans’ Disability Compensation.
