New Program Gives Veterans Bicycles

April 8, 2010 - Last month, at the Jonathon Wainwright Memorial in Walla Walla, WA, two companies presented veteran-patients with bicycles. This presentation was the first act in the new U.S. Veterans Bicycle Program launched by Retro, Allegro Cyclery, and Quality Bicycle Parts (QBP). The goal of the program is to get veterans riding bicycles for exercise, casual enjoyment, or rehabilitation.

Roger Mallette is Retro's founder and a U.S. Navy veteran. While visiting the Jonathon Wainwright memorial he discovered a 600 square foot storage facility containing broken down bicycles in all states of disrepair; some of them were completely dismantled. Mallette suggested he would like to work with Allegro Cyclery to bring the bicycles up to speed and make them safe for the veterans to use.

Allegro Cyclery agreed to provide, free of charge, all mechanical services required to restore 4 bicycles. In exchange, Retro bought all essential parts from QBP. QPB has been donating bicycle equipment and safety gear since February of this year, prior to being approached from Retro and they jumped at the chance to continue helping veterans. So far, the joint venture has produced:

  • Two cruisers;
  • One recumbent tricycle; and
  • One mountain bike.

 The Veterans Bicycle Program is the first one in existence. The positive response to the initial presentation of the bicycles has Retro looking to take this program to a national level. Once partnerships in other cities can be formed, the program will be able to introduce more veterans to the freedom experienced from the seat of a bicycle. In an effort to continue to helping veterans, the program will offer basic bicycle safety lessons for all veterans.
