A new study, published April 15 in the American Journal of Psychiatry, has revealed that hospitalization helps personality disorder patients achieve long-term symptom remission.
Personality disorder is characterized by the following traits:
The study involved 290 participants that were evaluated every 2 years after being hospitalized for an undisclosed period of time. By the 10th year of follow-up, it was discovered that 86% of those patients had maintained remission of symptoms.
This study has caused researchers to suggest rehabilitation that focuses on work skills and socialization. They believe that those who have been diagnosed with a personality disorder and receive hospitalization often achieve positive changes in self-perception. This may have the affect of reducing the need for Social Security disability benefits later on.
Personality disorders fall under Social Security Administration's listing of impairments for Mental Disorders. It is described as existing when: "personality traits are inflexible and maladaptive and cause either significant impairment in social or occupational functioning or subjective distress. Characteristic features are typical of the individual's long-term functioning and are not limited to discrete episodes of illness."
