According to a recently released study, most homeless veterans have disabilities, are white, and middle-aged. Further, compared with non-veterans in the same age group, younger veterans are "more than twice as likely" to end up homeless, according to an article in The San Antonio Express News.
The data collected and analyzed in the study showed that there were over 144,000 homeless veterans over the course of 2010. The study made a decisive strike against the claims made by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and the Obama administration that they're on track to eliminate homelessness among veterans in the next 3 years. The report also found approximately 5,000 fewer veterans used shelters and/or transitional housing in 2010.
This is the first study to provide solid evidence showing VA Sec. Eric Shinseki's 5-year goal of ending homelessness is "unrealistic." This is unsettling news for the VA as it has been aggressively spending money on VA programs geared toward eliminating homelessness as part of its continued effort to meet Sec. Shinseki's goal.
In the last couple years, the VA has poured money into such programs as housing vouchers, transitional housing programs, and seemingly endless therapy programs; however, if no progress is being made, it may just be a matter of time until budget cuts come into play to reduce the amount of government funding for this crisis.
