This year's estimated new cases in the United States for ovarian cancer are expected to be 21,880 resulting in 13,850 deaths. Ovarian cancer can lead an individual to seek long-term disability benefits if they become unable to work during treatment.
There are two types of ovarian cancer, ovarian epithelial carcinoma and malignant germ cell tumors. Ovarian epithelial carcinoma begins in the cells located on the surface of the ovary, while malignant germ cell tumors begin within the eggs cells.
There may now be a new target in the treatment of ovarian cancer as researchers discover an important protein. Regulating the onset of cell division may be a way to treat ovarian cancer.
Currently there are some chemotherapeutic drugs that work in the first phase of the cell cycle known as mitosis. However, some individuals have been found to be resistant to that type of treatment.
New therapeutic targets are being sought to more effectively treat ovarian cancer. SIK2, a protein that helps to regulate the cell cycle, may be the key factor. Researchers will continue to look into targeting this protein as a means of treatment for ovarian cancer.
If you have been diagnosed with ovarian cancer, you may be eligible for long-term disability, particularly the treatment has left you severely ill and unable to work. Contact a long-term disability lawyer to determine eligibility.
