When cancer debilitates an individual, it can lead them to file for Social Security disability benefits. These benefits can help cover some of the financial burden that results from a permanent disability.
Disabled World reports that
a specific tumor in brain cancer may one day be treated with an effective new therapy. The findings of this new study are available online in the
Journal of Neuro-Oncology.
Scientists from Texas Children's Hospital and Baylor College of Medicine have been able to successfully destroy brain cancer tumors in animal test subjects using a minimally invasive type of therapy.
This new therapy, photothermal therapy, uses heat to destroy glioma tumors which also prevents the usual side effects felt with radiation or drugs. Glioma tumors are aggressive and difficult to treat. Less than 5% of those who are diagnosed with this type of tumor live past 5 years.
The animal testing demonstrated that more than 3 months after receiving the treatment, more than half of the subjects had no further signs of cancer. This gives hope that photothermal therapy may be one day be a way to treat this deadly form of brain cancer in humans.
Scientists indicate that further testing will need to be done before human clinical trials can begin. They anticipate that to happen in about another year.
