In 2010, it was believed that U.S. soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan were suffering from bronchiolitis, which was believed to have been caused by breathing the air from burn pits. According to an article in Wired, however, that earlier study may have been wrong in what was causing so many veterans with disabilities.
At the time, burn pits were the "most obvious answer" to the mysterious ailments plaguing veterans, which has spawned thousands of lawsuits against the private contractors responsible for controlling the burning pits filled with plastic bottles, Styrofoam, and human waste.
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) recently commissioned a new study to look into the health issues of which veterans have been complaining. The results were classified as "frustratingly inconclusive." According to researchers, the military failed to collect enough useful data, which prevented the researchers from completing their tasks.
Veterans are still complaining of "chronic health problems," which include neurological, respiratory, and cardiovascular issues. Researchers cannot dismiss that burn pits possibly contributed to these conditions directly. Accurate records of what was thrown into the pits were not kept. In addition, the pits have all been closed, so air samples are no longer able to be gathered.
