Many disabled and low-income individuals who receive Social Security disability benefits are eligible for discounts and reduced admissions on various goods and services in consideration of their financial situation.
For example, many states grant free or discounted passes to parks and recreation activities for those with disabilities. Unfortunately, there are some people who take advantage of this perk, and attempt to utilize the discount despite not meeting the criteria. When this happens, it is often the disabled who actually wind up suffering the consequences of other people's actions.
The New York Times reports New York's Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation is considering addressing this issue by possibly eliminating or more strictly regulating who can receive free passes to campsites, parks, and golf courses.
Officials will look more closely at semi-ambulatory residents seeking discounted fares, as well as those individuals receiving SSI, disability benefits, or Railroad Retirement Board Disability.
Though officials believe about 65% of those receiving free or discounted park passes would have them revoked, many would still enjoy the benefits. Those who are deaf, blind, nonambulatory, mentally disabled, disabled veterans, and amputees would still receive the Access Pass, which grants free access to select city services.
