Cardiovascular problems can lead to serious, even disabling complications. If you've become permanently disabled as a result of a cardiovascular condition, you may be entitled to receive Social Security disability benefits.
According to a report from CNN Health, non-emergency angioplasties are performed more often than necessary. In a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, as much as half of those that are performed, in order to widen arteries, don't need to be done.
The procedure, percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), otherwise known as angioplasty, is done in emergency situations when patients are suffering a heart attack; however, they're also done in non-emergency situations such as when there's partial blockage of one or more arteries.
Many of these procedures are even done on patients who show low risks of heart conditions. This was found after several major heart centers analyzed data on angioplasties performed in the years 2009 and 2010.
They also found that some hospitals were more likely than other hospitals to perform these unnecessary angioplasties. It was found that 71% of those who didn't need it done had private insurance, which means that the procedures could be paid for.
Not only would money be saved if less of these were performed but patients also wouldn't suffer from some of the side effects that come along with an angioplasty, such as blood clots.
