Noninvasive Brain Stimulation May Help Recovery from Stroke

A stroke can change an individual's life in an instant. After a stroke, the sufferer may find that they can no longer walk, work or perform daily tasks. When a stroke makes work impossible for an individual who has not yet reached retirement age, Social Security disability benefits may help offset the financial burden of lost wages.

A new study indicates that noninvasive brain stimulation may help aid in recovery from a stroke. In fact, it was found to help partially paralyzed victims of stroke to regain a significant amount of muscle function.

This study looked at 60 patients who suffered an ischemic stroke, which is caused by a reduction of blood flow to the brain. They were left with mild to moderate weakness on the affected side of their body.

Out of these 60 patients, 40 of them received noninvasive brain stimulation known as transcranial magnetic stimulation. Over a period of 10 days, 20 patients were treated on the side of the brain that was affected by the stroke and 20 patients were treated on the unaffected side. The other 20 patients received placebo treatment.

It was found that both groups who had gone through brain stimulation had made great improvements. However, no improvement was found in those who had gone through placebo treatment.

Researchers plan on conducting larger-scaled clinical trials to ensure cognitive abilities are not affected.
