A nonprofit organization in Ohio that provides assistance for homeless and impoverished individuals - many of whom rely on Social Security disability benefits to survive - has recently learned that one of its employees allegedly was stealing funds from the people whom she was charged with helping.
The Toledo Blade reports that Lisa Duda, an employee of St. Paul's Community Center in Toledo has been charged with stealing thousands of dollars from the nonprofit organization, which seeks to help the homeless to better care for their finances. Authorities say Duda illegally withdrew money from a bank account into which program participants' money was deposited for use in paying bills and other living expenses. She is said to have used the money to pay for her own household costs.
Many of the victims of Duda's alleged theft are unable to obtain employment and rely on Social Security disability benefit checks. Authorities believe that the bulk of the stolen funds were derived from the nonprofit's client's Social Security benefits. The theft is alleged to have taken place over the course of five years.
