Not Everyone is Excited About Possible Check Instead of COLA

Whether you get Supplemental Security Income or some other assistance from the SSA, you have probably heard the news about the missing cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA. You would normally see the extra money on your checks starting in January 2010, usually adding a few percentage points to your income. However, the lack of recent inflation, combined with the government's gargantuan debt, has convinced lawmakers that there is no need for COLA anytime soon

While many recipients of Social Security are understandably upset, some have held out for the possibility of a one-time check for $250. Backed by President Obama and other politicians, the money could help offset costs for some. However, not everyone is looking forward to this prospect, namely because the money would be disbursed regardless of income.

According to San Jose Mercury News, statistics show that seniors, many of whom would be the recipient of the checks, have been least affected by the economy. After all, those who are already retired or receiving disability did not find themselves suddenly unemployed, and their income has not really changed. Additionally, many claim that the cost of living has indeed decreased, so everyone can get more for their money.

Those who do not want the check have questions of whether they can give it back. Perhaps they can offer it to schools or the homeless, since some who are eligible to receive the money do not feel they need it. The fact that the checks will be given out with no regard to current income makes many uneasy because it is possible that the people who do not need the money will receive it. In fact, it seems that those who do not need it are protesting the most.

If you do not feel you need the check, do not worry yet. It is not a sure thing. To get the latest news on the issue, you can contact a lawyer.
