Number of Homeless Female Veterans Doubles Since 2006

Yearly statistics on the number of female homeless veterans show that the problem continues to grow. In 2006, the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) reported 1,380 female veterans were without a permanent residence. In 2010, numbers more than doubled reaching to 3,328. These reports from the Government Accountability Office show that veteran homelessness is still an issue that needs immediate action.

Female veterans are often placed in a difficult situation when they seek even temporary shelter. There are few temporary residences that offer accommodations for female needs or the ability to offer privacy. Many female veterans also have children, whom they must attend to as well, making finding adequate housing more difficult than a single veteran.

The VA’s main housing programs, the Grand and Per Diem programs that serve homeless female veterans do not house children, which impact the largest group of homeless female veterans that are between the ages of 40 and 59.

Disabled female veterans are also poorly accommodated with many VA centers lacking the necessary specialists and facilities for female medical needs. Female veterans have just as much right to veteran’s disability benefits as male veterans and should consider applying for benefits if they need financial assistance.

If you are a disabled veteran who has been denied disability compensation or have not yet applied for benefits from the VA, a South Florida disability attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg is ready to help. To learn if you are entitled to certain programs and benefits contact our veteran’s disability rights firm today – 1-888-234-5758.
