In a report from
Health Finder,
obese esophageal cancer patients may be at risk of recurrence and death. When cancer becomes disabling, you could qualify to receive
Social Security disability benefits. In comparison to patients at a normal weight, it was found in a new study that
those who are obese and undergo surgery to treat esophageal cancer had twice the chance of the cancer coming back or dying from it. These findings could lead to changes in the way doctors treat patients who are overweight with esophageal cancer.
The study found that those who were at a
normal weight had a 36% survival rate over a 5-year period; however, for those
patients who were obese, their rate of survival was only 18%.
Patients are considered to be obese when their body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher. Obesity isn’t only a consideration in the recurrence and death rate but it’s also found to be a risk factor for developing this particular type of cancer.
Doctors may wish to look at not only treating the cancer but helping the patient to address their weight issues.
Esophageal cancer is a serious form of cancer that could lead to disability.
