Oncologists Not Always Up to Par in Managing Cancer Pain

In a report from Medline Plus, a new survey finds that oncologists aren’t always doing a good job to manage cancer pain. Cancer can lead to months of recovery and an inability to work. You may qualify for long-term disability benefits which can help to offset your lost income.

A similar study was done in 1990, which revealed that pain management practices in the U.S. were in need of help. Despite many oncologists indicating in this latest survey that they do a good job at helping patients manage their pain, results from a test show otherwise.

Included in the survey were 2 scenarios involving cancer patients. When asked which treatment plan would be the right one, 60% missed the right answers on one test and 87% missed on the second test.

Oncologists tend to focus more on treating the cancer and less on pain
or other uncomfortable symptoms. Pain specialists may also be of help in the overall treatment plan. Experts also indicate that patients should be more open and honest about their pain.

If you’ve been diagnosed with cancer and will be out of work for an extended period of time, you should speak to a Deerfield Beach long-term disability attorney to learn if you’re eligible for disability benefits. If your claim for benefits was denied, an attorney can help appeal that decision too.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don’t make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.

When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you’ve been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S! Contact a Deerfield Beach long-term disability attorney today – 1-888-234-5758.
