Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause for blindness and visual impairment in older adults. When AMD begins to affect an individual's ability to work and function, Social Security disability benefits may be available.
According to a report from
Disabled World,
there has been significant progress made in stem cell therapy for AMD. Researchers hope that this could lead to a cure for the condition, which until this point, has presented a particular challenge to the medical community.
Researchers are now even closer to treating this degenerative disease through human induced pluripotent stem (hiPS) cells, which utilizes the individual's own stem cells in order to generate cells and tissues to be used for transplantation.
For the first time ever, researchers from Georgetown University Medical Center have been able to create retinal cells derived from hiPS. These mimic the cells that actually die and lead to vision loss.
Although more work needs to be done in order to figure out how transplantation can work, this critical step shows they are gaining ground. Researchers hope to see regenerative medicine as a viable option one day soon.
