The Army's Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training, and Instrumentation (PEO-STRI), which is located in Orlando, just landed a very large contract. The command will be responsible for purchasing all the medical simulation training-systems for the Department of Veterans Affairs' (VA) hospitals, which number 150 across the country.
The contract itself is worth $5 million , and it was expected to bring local jobs with it. The Army, however, has only added 5 new positions. As this work is still in its very early stages, and the scope of the contract is a national one, it is believed more positions will be needed to complete the work.
The demand for medical simulation-training material is only going to grow. Industry experts expect that growth to be exponential, which places demands on supply. The more demand, the more people will be needed to fill that demand. In time, local jobs should develop.
Both the Army and the Navy, which has their own counterpart department located in Central Florida, have become popular agencies for the companies competing for these contracts in training-simulation. Every year, billions of dollars in such contracts are awarded. This has forced the Army to go through a sizeable expansion over the last couple of years to accommodate new possibilities for acquisitions.
As the Army does more work for the VA, there will likely develop new need for medical technology companies in Central Florida. The Army's budget for medical simulation-training technology will likely increase over the years, and the result of that will be more jobs being created in the Central Florida region.
