Orlando VA Offers Program To Help Veterans Get Back On Their Feet

The Orlando VA Medical Center is one of the VA facilities offering The Domiciliary Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program (DRRTP), a national Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) program that serves to help veterans get back on their feet by offering a supportive and therapeutic environment.

The program is designed for those veterans determined to be "at-risk." Those veterans are placed into a residential and rehabilitative population, which then helps to bring the veteran back up to a favorable level of operability. The ultimate goal is to place participating veterans into independent living.

Individual veterans' needs are going to dictate the length of their stay. Most stay on premises between 1 to 6 months. There are three paths of treatment from which veterans can take, depending on their personal circumstances:

  • homeless prevention;
  • compensated work therapy; and
  • intensive substance abuse residential rehabilitation.

The DRRTP program is short-term and gives veterans the skills they will need to live independently and avoid becoming homeless.

The DRRTP provides a wide gamut of support services in the following areas:

  • physical;
  • behavioral;
  • spiritual;
  • psychosocial;
  • addiction counseling;
  • vocational;
  • dietary;
  • occupational therapy; and
  • interventions.

In those situations where it is necessary, the program's staff will tend to necessary medical and mental health issues. It is important to note this is not shelter housing. Rather, veterans will be housed and must undergo the various treatment activities.
