According to a report from the Doctor's Lounge, orthopedic surgery patients with heart disease are at an increased risk of complications. When you are unable to work during treatment and recovery of a serious medical condition, then you could be eligible to receive long-term disability benefits.
Patients who have heart disease and undergo orthopedic surgery could be at risk of excessive bleeding or developing a blood clot, this is according to a new study.
Researchers founds that in a pool of over 3,000 patients, those who underwent orthopedic surgery such as knee, hip, or spine, had a 5.4% increased risk of excessive bleeding and a 5.8% increased risk of blood clots.
Additionally, the study revealed that blood clots were also increased in those who were older and have kidney disease. Furthermore, women had an increased risk of bleeding complications.
Despite these risks, not enough patients are being given aspirin before surgery, which will now hopefully prompt doctors and surgeons to reconsider the risks associated.
