According to an article on
SierraClub.com, the
Sierra Club’s Military Families Outdoors program and Wilderness Inquiry (WI) have coupled so as to be able to offer U.S. veterans the opportunity to explore the wilderness while learning how to move forward. The trips are specifically planned to build upon the leadership experience already instilled in most veterans, and show them how to run their own
outdoor excursions.
At the same time, the trips expose veterans to “outdoor adventures,” which foster a positive environment and have allowed many veterans to heal, share, and learn from one another. These
trips not only emphasize working as a team to solve problems, but also promote personal growth.
There will be 4 training trips scheduled over the next year in Sierra Club habitats for 36 veterans.
Each trip will last between 6-7 days and will include outdoor activities such as:
- · hiking;
- · camping;
- · paddling; and
- · outdoor exploration.
Every trip will be lead by an experienced staff member, whose job it is to train those veterans to lead their own adventure trips.
Every location will provide veterans the opportunity to receive training in multiple disciplines, such as:
- · outdoor leadership;
- · kayaking and/or canoeing;
- · outdoor cooking;
- · establishing outdoor camps; and
- · using adaptive equipment for veterans with disabilities.
