Medline Plus reports that
despite evidence of ovarian cancer screening being more harmful than beneficial, physicians still find it effective. If cancer or any other severe health condition is preventing you from working for several months,
long-term disability benefits could be available.
A new survey finds that
a third of primary physicians in the United States offer ovarian cancer screening to their patients and believe it’s beneficial. Although there are no hard statistics,
it’s thought that as many as a million women could be offered a test that comes with serious risks.
Ovarian cancer screening hasn’t been shown to save lives and those who never had a test were no more likely to die from the cancer than those who did. So the costs involved in undergoing what may be an unnecessary test is concerning.
On the other hand, a
high number of women also receive false positives. Some of these incorrect results have led to unnecessary treatment, such as surgery.
Although many physicians indicate they have or would offer the tests, experts don’t believe it has translated into a large number of women actually undergoing them; however, they’d like to see physicians recognize the fact that it’s more harmful than beneficial to most patients.
