Pain Relievers Could Increase Risk of Heart Attack or Death for Certain Patients

A heart attack can lead to complications that become disabling. If you are no longer able to work because of a severe medical condition, Social Security disability benefits may be available to you.

In a report from CNN Health, new research finds that pain relievers could increase the risk of a heart attack or death for certain patients. Additionally, short-term use of some pain relievers or anti-inflammatory drugs could also be unsafe.

When a debilitating condition such as arthritis or lupus keeps an individual in constant pain, they often turn to pain relievers like Celebrex or ibuprofen. However if these same patients also have heart problems, it could be detrimental to their overall health.

Following heart attack patients between the years 1997 and 2006, the risk of death and an additional heart attack was increased by 45% for those using pain relievers for just one week. If the pain relievers were taken for at least 3 months, the risk was increased to 55%.

This leads to the belief that pain relievers should be avoided for patients with heart disease or those who have already had a heart attack.

While in general the risk is associated with prescription medication, they are still cautioning about the use of the over-the-counter type pain relievers and that patients should be carefully monitored. Talking to your doctor about a safe treatment plan is important.
