Parkinson’s Disease Linked to Increased Rate of Prostate and Melanoma Cancer

A new study indicates that not only are patients with Parkinson's at a higher risk of these cancers but family members could also be. This comes after researchers' analyzed genealogical data on almost 3,000 people whose deaths were due to Parkinson's.

There were higher rates of people suffering from melanoma or prostate cancer, with the risk also extending to relatives in the 1^st, 2^nd and 3^rd generation. This indicates a strong genetic link between Parkinson's and melanoma and prostate cancer.

The hope is that these results will shed light in other areas of research, particularly in understanding how Parkinson's disease works and new screening strategies for melanoma and prostate cancer.

These preliminary findings will still need to face larger studies.
