Patients Newly Diagnosed with Diabetes at Risk of Liver Disease

Researchers find that patients who are newly diagnosed with diabetes are at risk of developing liver disease, including liver failure and cirrhosis.

Diabetes is known to have negative effects on the blood vessels, kidneys and eyes. However, little has been known about its possible effects on the liver. Now researchers have discovered that while 4 in 10,000 persons without diabetes are at risk of developing liver disease, 8 in 10,000 individuals with diabetes are at risk of developing complications with the liver.

In another study conducted by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, it was found that the risk of developing serious liver disease was 2 times higher for those diagnosed with diabetes.

Liver disease is a serious and potentially deadly disease. It can become a debilitating condition leaving a patient unable to work or perform normal daily functions. The Social Security Administration may provide Social Security disability benefits to those who suffer from liver disease in order to help cover lost income.

Some of the symptoms of liver disease include:

  • jaundice;
  • fatigue;
  • weakness;
  • loss of appetite; and
  • nausea.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with liver disease or any other serious mental or physical condition, you may be eligible for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a disability lawyer who can help you determine eligibility.
