Health Day reports that in a new study, it was found that millions of patients with peripheral artery disease are not taking medication. This puts them at serious risk of suffering a fatal heart problem. If you were diagnosed with a severe health condition that will stop you from working and interferes with daily functioning, then you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits.
From this research, it was found that 25% of participants with peripheral artery disease (PAD) were taking high blood pressure medication, 36% were taking aspirin, and 31% were taking drugs to lower cholesterol.
For those patients who took 2 or more drugs, the risk of death over a 7 year period was 65% less. Researchers believe that not enough doctors are properly treating patients with PAD.
PAD is an early warning that there may be a clogged blood vessel somewhere in the body; however, many times symptoms of it will point to a potential blocked artery in the legs, called atherosclerosis. Symptoms include cramping or burning sensation in the legs.
Not all patients experience these symptoms, which is why getting blood pressure regularly checked is important since this can help detect PAD.
