Patients Receiving Stents Often Rehospitalized

In a report from Medline Plus, too many patients receiving stents end up being rehospitalized. If a severe cardiovascular event should prevent you from working, then long-term disability benefits may be available.

A study that comes from New York State, found that 1 in 6 patients who received a stent to open up clogged arteries, had to be readmitted to the hospital within a month of the medical procedure. Although New York tends to have higher rates of readmission, it continues to be a problem in other states as well.

Other studies have shown higher than expected incidences of readmissions for patients. This is a concern for several reasons, one of them being the cost to the healthcare system and the patients.

Some experts believe many of these readmissions could be prevented; however, the study indicates that those who are at the highest risk of having to go back are those who are older and have other medical conditions, which aren’t preventable issues.

Options for preventing some of the readmissions include keeping patients in longer, providing more aggressive care and better instructions on after care.
Yet at the same time, researchers indicate that sometimes complications do happen and there’s nothing that can be done to avoid being rehospitalized.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don’t make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.
