The Patriot Guard is a nonprofit organization-and a motorcycle club-spanning the entire nation. Their mission is varied, but ranges from supporting grieving families during military funerals to escorting the funeral itself.
Their charge isn't limited to veterans, however, as they also escort funerals for firefighters and police officers. They do not, however, attend funerals unless they are specifically invited by the aggrieved family. It is not unheard of for Patriot Guard members to ride tens of thousands of miles over the years attending Patriot Guard missions.
The Patriot Guard formed in 2005 in response to a Kansas church holding open protests at funerals of fallen soldiers. At the church's next protest, the newly formed Patriot Guard escorted the funeral and attached American flags to 8-foot poles so as to prevent the family from even detecting the protestors' presence.
Currently, there are more than 215,000 Patriot Group members. The organization itself is 100% Internet-driven, and word is constantly spread throughout American Legion posts, other motorcycle groups, and through other veterans. Members don't have to own a motorcycle to belong, don't have to adhere to any specific political view, and don't even have to be a veteran.
One of the Patriot Guard's most constructive programs is called Help On The Home Front. Along with conducting "feel-good missions" through that program, the Guard also raises money for school scholarships for children of soldiers killed in action.
