If you suffer from a severe physical condition that requires daily medical treatment and prevents you from working, you may qualify for long-term disability benefits.
Millions of people in the United States rely on pharmaceuticals to help combat symptoms of various ailments, such as diabetes, chronic depression and heart disease. A new study authored by a sociologist from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey suggests that some newly developed pharmaceuticals may be doing more harm than good.
Pharmaceutical companies often receive incentives to develop newer drugs that can help combat chronic health conditions. This study asserts that in an effort to produce more drugs (and thereby, profit) the general effectiveness and safety of the products are often compromised.
Because pharmaceutical companies are afforded many protections by the government, critics have voiced concerns that the drug manufacturers are failing to disclose side effects that a drug may have or overstating the benefits of a drug. The study states that approximately 85% of newly developed drugs fail to offer any real health benefits.
In turn, doctors may receive misleading information that leads to patients being misinformed. The hope is that the findings of this study will help to spark some critical changes in the quality of trials and evidence sought when producing new drugs.
