October 20, 2010 - Gina Elise is the founder of Pun-Ups for Vets, a non-profit focused on helping veterans' programs. Elise sells calendars of classic pin-up girls to raise money for both Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) programs and various facilities. She is now in the running to be awarded a $50,000 grant from Pepsi in order to help her reach her goal of visiting a minimum of 1 VA or VA medical center in every state. To date, she has covered 12 states and visited 19 facilities.
Elise started Pin-Ups for Vets in 2006. After hearing how severely under-funded hospital programs were and how that meant returning soldiers would not receive proper medical attention, she took it upon herself to better the situation. Her only problem was how to incorporate her love of pin-ups and World War II nose art (paintings of pin-ups on airplanes) into helping these soldiers.
Elise donated her entire first year's proceeds to the Loma Linda VA medical center as well as the Jerry L. Pettis Memorial VA Medical Center's assisted-living facility. The following May she donated $5,000 directly from selling her calendar.
Elise has touched potentially thousands of lives and serves as positive example to the area children. Along with personally signing each calendar, she also sells T-shirts and posters. She personally delivers gifts that have been donated to hospitals. For those overseas troops, she sends CARE packages with the hopes of lifting morale.
The Pin-Ups for Vets program actively elevates consciousness regarding veterans' health issues as well as encourages people to volunteer at local VA facilities. Many VA and VA medical center residents do not get regular visitors. Elise is also looking for business sponsors interested in helping the non-profit continue to grow.
