A new study shows that stent patients who take the blood thinner Plavix in conjuction with certain heartburn drugs, such as Nexium and Protonix, may have a greater chance of suffering a heart attack, stroke and/or being hospitalized for chest pain or a coronary artery bypass operation compared to those who take Plavix alone. Researchers also extend this caution to patients mixing Plavix with over-the-counter heartburn medications like Prilosec.
Doctors often prescribe these popular heartburn drugs to patients taking Plavix because the blood thinner has been known to cause ulcers. If you're someone that fits this criteria you may want to contact your doctor to express your concerns.
