Potential for New Treatments in Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer can result in an individual filing for long-term disability benefits. While a person undergoes treatment and recovery, long-term disability benefits can help to cover their lost income.

According to the Journal Sentinel, a clinical trial shows promise for a minimally invasive procedure for prostate cancer. Before it can become a routine form of treatment, more research will be required.

Millions of men in the United States have been diagnosed with prostate cancer. In some cases they undergo prostatectomy, which involves removing all or part of the prostate gland. This also comes with potential side effects.

This new minimally-invasive procedure may be able to shrink the prostate in a safe, effective manner. The procedure is called prostatic artery embolization. Under local anesthesia, the patient's blood supply is cut off which causes the prostate to shrink.

A catheter is placed through one of the groin's arteries and releases tiny particles into the arteries located inside the prostate. Of the 84 men involved in the study, 77 of them improved significantly. Of the other 7 men left, only 1 had no signs of improvement where the others had some.

Researchers indicate that in some cases, improvements in urinary problems were seen as quickly as within 2 hours of having the procedure.

While there were definite benefits seen in the procedure, larger clinical trials will need to be done.

A Fort Lauderdale disability claim lawyer can talk to you about your eligibility for long-term disability benefits after a diagnosis of prostate cancer.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve. When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you to cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S!
