While
Jim Gingras, an Army veteran, may not have lost the use of his legs due to a combat-related injury, but his service to his country earned him the support from Wheels for Disabled Veterans (WDV), a Colorado-based organization that has been providing power wheelchairs and scooters to
disabled veterans.
Gingras, who’s paralyzed from the waist down after a 2011 motorcycle accident, received
a wheelchair that was only briefly used by another veteran who passed away earlier in the year.
It was shipped to his Massachusetts home for free through Federal Express and included 2 donated batteries. The
chair was presented at a special ceremony at the family’s home and was attended by the WDV founder as well as local political representatives and members of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts.
WDV is one of many
disabled veterans’ assistance organizations that strive to help veterans across the nation with their disability needs. The
WDV founder, Air Force veteran Jack Levinson, says the hardest part about getting help to deserving veterans is finding them.
It’s up to a veteran to make the necessary efforts to obtain veterans’ disability benefits or gain access to the numerous services and support organizations that serve veterans.
