March 23, 2010 - Vietnam veteran Ted Baker has sued the drug company AstraZeneca. He claims their drug, Seroquel, caused him to develop Type 2 diabetes. Baker's is the first of 26,000 cases pending against AstraZeneca regarding their drug Seroquel.
Baker was prescribed Seroquel, an antipsychotic drug, in an attempt to handle his post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms resulting from military service. AstraZeneca is being sued by thousands of U.S. citizens for misleading them about the health risks associated with the drug.
AstraZeneca has recognized the possibility Seroquel could affect blood sugar levels and could possibly cause significant weight gain. They have also acknowledged the link between Seroquel and diabetes but not that Seroquel causes diabetes. Contrary to Baker's claims, AstraZeneca argue his diabetes stem from his lifestyle, not from the Seroquel.
AstraZeneca is a UK based company and a UK regulatory panel recently ruled AstraZeneca did not truthfully depict all of Seroquel's side effects in a doctor's advertisement. AstraZeneca apparently ignored their researchers' attempt to remove the word, "limited" from the drug's listed weight gain side effect. Financial considerations and sales concerns were apparently the leading cause of not changing the drug's labeling.
Baker was prescribed Seroquel in 2000 by Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) doctors at a Louisiana VA Administration Hospital. Doctors noted immediate improvement in Baker's symptoms. Whether there was improvement in Baker's PTSD symptoms or not, the question still remains if Seroquel caused Baker's diabetes. Depending on the outcome of his trial, we could see a much more or much less court time for this issue.
