Prescription Drug Costs Expected to Drop Due to Patents Expiring

In a report from Health News, prescription drug costs are expected to drop as a result of patents expiring. This is due to the greater availability of generic brand medication. When a severe health condition leads to disability, you could be eligible to receive long-term disability benefits which could help offset your lost income.

Out of the top 20 best selling prescription drugs, 7 of them will have patents that expire by Sept. 2012.
Generic brands will replace these which are expected to provide significant cost savings to patients and health insurance companies.

Drastic cuts in prices are expected to be seen in medications that treat the following:

  • high blood pressure;
  • diabetes;
  • asthma;
  • high triglycerides;
  • bipolar;
  • depression; and
  • HIV/AIDS.

In the next decade, more savings are expected, as 120 new prescription medications become available. These will replace other brand name prescription drugs as well.

Health News
also reports that the use of generic brand prescription medications has risen from 57% in 2004, to 78% in 2010.

If you've been diagnosed with a severe health condition and you'll be unable to work for a period of time, you should seek legal counsel. A Fort Lauderdale long-term disability attorney can help determine eligibility or assist you with a claim that has been denied.

Long-term disability benefits may be available to those who have purchased a disability plan from a private insurer or have coverage through an employer. Unfortunately, the insurers don't make it easy for the disabled to get access to the benefits they deserve.

When a severe medical condition makes it impossible for you to work and you've been denied your long-term disability benefits, an attorney from LaVan & Neidenberg, P.A. can help you cut through the red tape and fight for your benefits, no matter where you live in the U.S!
