Preventing Heart Disease

The American Heart Association has announced a new initiative to reduce heart disease and stroke deaths in the United States by 20% by the year 2020. The lofty plan also aims to increase the heart health of every American by at least 20% in the next ten years.

Heart disease is a debilitating disease that affects millions of Americans. The Center for Disease Control estimates that more than 1.25 million people each year suffer from a coronary event. The CDC says heart disease is the leading cause of death for Americans and a "major cause of disability."

In the interest of sparing millions of Americans from the disability associated with heart disease, the AHA has set forth a few guidelines for the 2020 Impact goals.

Listed below are the AHA's program guidelines to improve heart health
:

Lower your salt intake
- Consume less than 1,500 mg./day (2,300 mg./day was the previous guideline)

Limit your consumption of sugary drinks - No more than 36 oz./week

Monitor your blood pressure - Strive for lower than 120/80

Check your fasting blood glucose level - It should be below 100

Get more exercise - Aim for 150 minutes of moderate physical activity each week

If you are one of the millions of Americans who is affected by heart disease, talk to your doctor about which lifestyle changes are best for you and how to approach improving your health. If heart disease has limited your ability to work, you may be entitled to Social Security disability benefits, which can provide you with the financial support that you so desperately need.

If you or your loved is suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility. The process of securing Social Security Disability and/or Supplemental Security Income benefits can be difficult and overwhelming. Don't go it alone! The attorneys at LaVan & Neidenberg, located in Atlanta, Georgia, understand the inner workings of the Social Security Administration and will help you navigate the system.
