Thousands of soldiers entering the private sector following their military service find it difficult to secure employment, as is evidenced by the unsettlingly high unemployment rate among veterans. Many of those soldiers end up opening their own businesses and some thrive because of their veterans' disability status. Veteran-owned businesses are eligible for more set-aside contracts from both private companies and government agencies.
President Obama recently made a series of suggestions that should bring more work to veteran-owned businesses. One of his proposals involved firms hiring unemployed veterans being given tax credits. This while he challenged the private sector to meet a 2014 deadline in which it hires 100,000 unemployed veterans or their spouses.
The number of states with laws either encouraging the creation of veteran-owned businesses or laws generating opportunities for "state-government contracting" is quickly growing. That growth has led more veteran-owned businesses to advertise their businesses as veteran-owned, which is not something that has traditionally been done.
There is certainly a new mindset among private-sector businesses when it comes to awarding contracts to veteran-owned businesses. This is a very clear departure from the attitude toward veteran-owned businesses that followed the Vietnam War, which was one of discrimination toward veteran-owned businesses because of the general unpopularity of the war.
