Prognosis of Colon Cancer Worse for Obese, Type 2 Diabetes Patients

In a report from USA Today, the prognosis of colon cancer is worse for those with type 2 diabetes and who are also overweight. When a severe medical condition results in disability, then you could qualify for Social Security disability benefits.

According to 2 new studies, not only does type 2 diabetes and obesity negatively impact the rate of survival for those with colon cancer but it also increases the risk of death from heart disease. This is a good indicator of why maintaining a healthy weight and exercising is important.

In a study that was performed, the risk of death from all causes was 30% greater for those who are obese, in comparison to those at a healthy weight. The risk of dying from heart disease was 68% greater and from colorectal cancer was 35% greater.

In another study, the risk of death from all causes was 53% higher for those with type 2 diabetes. The risk of death was 2.16 times higher from heart disease but increased 4 times higher if those with type 2 diabetes also used insulin.

When you’ve been diagnosed with a severe medical condition that prevents you from continuing to work, then you may qualify for disability benefits. Consulting with a Miami Social Security disability attorney is the best way to learn what options may be available.
