Program Aims to Help Returning Veterans Fortify Their Marriages

Veterans returning from deployments face many unique challenges in their civilian lives. Many of those challenges center around readjusting to their lives at home. One of the greatest assets in facing these challenges is a strong support system. Many veterans, however, struggle with their marriages upon their return to the states. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is offering a program to help those veterans and their spouses with their marriages.

The VA will train military chaplains and behavioral health specialists to work specific skills-building programs into the sessions in which they attempt to help veterans improve their relationships. Both VA and Department of Defense (DoD) health professionals will take part in concentrated training programs over this coming summer.

The training programs will last 4 days, and will be held at various locations across the country. The system has a history of providing positive results. The end product is efficient and successful relationship support and marriage enrichment services for veterans and their spouses.

VA chaplains praise the preliminary results. Many times the readjustment process provokes tumultuous environments, which are not the best in which to attempt to repair and rebuild relationships. This program assures the participants are placed in a calm and safe environment within which to build the strong support system needed to successfully readjust to their new civilian lives.
