June 7, 2010 - For years both local and federal Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offices have been developing programs specifically for female veterans. It became quickly apparent most VA facilities were not equipped to handle the physical requirements female veterans demanded. Just as important, however, have been programs focusing on mental health requirements for female veterans.
Post Traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects women in many of the same ways it affects male soldiers, yet in other ways the effects are much different. These different effects usually come because of a woman's traditional role as a caregiver.
Enter Project Odyssey. Project Odyssey is run by the Wounded Warriors Project and VetCenters, which is a derivative of the VA. The Adaptive Sports Foundation in Windham hosts this particular program and is offered at no cost to participants.
Project Odyssey is unique in that it combines counseling sessions with activities as horseback riding. The thinking behind this approach is that it will provide an activity in which females can bond and will therefore make it easier to talk to one another. Many times the activities are new to the participants so they can all show their courage in facing something new at the same time.
Many times people don't know there are other women around them that have had similar experiences. Once they find out there are others out there and they can share, those emotions can be discussed and explored. Relating to one another's stories builds trust and confidence between the women.
In order to be able to participate in Project Odyssey, women must be undergoing treatment for PTSD. The program only lasts 5 days and will not be enough time to fully heal. Participants will, however, come out the other side with a brand new support system.
Soldiers can return home with a number of conditions, injuries, and aggravated preexisting conditions. If you believe you have a service-connected physical or psychological injury you may be entitled to Veterans’ Disability Compensation.
At LaVan and Neidenberg, we are determined to secure veterans their rightful disability compensation and disability rating. We wrote this book for you! In it you will find valuable tips on how to navigate the claims process and avoid common pitfalls. Request your FREE copy today!
