Property taxes excused for disabled vets

Are you a disabled veteran and homeowner in the state of Florida? Were you honorably discharged from the military? If so, you may qualify for an exemption from property taxes on real estate you use and own as your "homestead."

For a veteran to qualify for the homestead tax exemption - a 100% exemption from paying real estate taxes - the veteran must submit certain documents to the state, including:

  • A letter from the U.S. government or VA certifying that the veteran is "totally and permanently disabled" as a result of a service-connected disability
  • Paperwork establishing the veteran was honorably discharged
  • Proof that the veteran was a permanent resident of Florida as of January 1 of the tax year for which exemption is claimed

Surviving spouses of a qualifying veteran may also be eligible for the exemption.

Contact the property appraiser of the county in which the homestead lies to find out more information on how to apply for the Florida veterans homestead exemption.
