Proposed Extension of Disability Benefits to Blue Water Navy Veterans

December 16, 2011 – In a report from the Post Star, a bill has been introduced to extend disability benefits to Navy Veterans exposed to Agent Orange.

Congressman Chris Gibson, R-Kinderhook is responsible for introducing this bill which would allow disability benefits for those who served in Vietnam but weren’t on land, yet were still exposed to Agent Orange.

The bill is also being pushed by Denny Rehberg, R-Montana, Tim Walz, D-Minnesota and Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas. It would move revert to original legislation that was passed in 1991, which allowed all veterans who had been exposed to Agent Orange to receive benefits.

Then in 2002, the law was narrowed down to only those who actually set foot on land in Vietnam. There was some broadening of the law to include those soldiers who sailed on waterways but it did not allow for sailors who had been on surrounding seas.

Approximately 33,000 veterans have been denied benefits despite signs of Agent Orange contamination due to the fact they did not serve on Vietnam land.
