Proposed SSA Program Would Offer Work Assistance to the Blind

For those receiving Social Security disability benefits, there is a way to work while still getting monthly benefit checks for several months until you can determine that the job will be long-term. This is possible under the Ticket to Work program. A similar program has been proposed to cater specifically to the blind and visually impaired.

According to PR Newswire, Senator John McCain (R-AZ) and Senator Christopher Dodd (D-CT) recently introduced the Blind Persons Return to Work Act of 2010. The bill was introduced with the intention of making it easier for the blind to transition to the working world without fear of losing their disability benefits.

Unfortunately, many disabled individuals may want to work but are discouraged by the income limits set by the SSA. Similar to the Ticket to Work program, monthly payments would be slowly phased out as the disabled individual earned new income.

This can be a risky venture for the disabled worker, as employment income is not guaranteed in the same manner that monthly disability benefits are. In some instances, disability payments might have to be reinstated as a safety net.

If you are considering using either this program or the Ticket to Work program, contact a lawyer to find out if you should apply.
