Prostate Cancer Advances with Uninsured Patients

The American Cancer Society reports that the 5-year survival rate for men diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer is 30.6%, compared to 100% of those diagnosed with regional or localized prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer can leave an individual disabled and unable to work as they seek treatment for this potentially fatal disease. Social Security disability benefits can help offset the financial burden as a person undergoes treatment for and recovery from a debilitating medical condition.

An analysis conducted by the National Cancer Database has found that prostate cancer advances with uninsured patients
. This is due to the fact that they have less access to medical care and treatment.

Advanced prostate cancer was found to be prevalent in those who had no insurance, compared to patients who carried private insurance. A lack of access to preventative services and medical examinations raises the risk of prostate cancer progressing.

Early detection is vital to treating prostate cancer. The American Cancer Society urges men who are 50 years and older to discuss with their doctor the benefits and risks of baseline screening for prostate cancer. In addition, men who have other family members diagnosed with prostate cancer should begin these discussions by age 40.

Prostate cancer can advance to the point of disability, leaving an individual unable to take care of themselves or their family. Social Security disability benefits can help. Contact a Social Security disability attorney who can examine your medical records and determine if you may qualify for these benefits.
