Prostate cancer affects more than 2 million men in the United States. In 2009 there were more than 27,000 deaths caused by prostate cancer. Those who suffer from prostate cancer may be unable to work as a result of their illness and required treatment. When this happens, Social Security disability benefits may be necessary to make up for the loss of income.
A standard form of treatment, hormone therapy, often advances prostate cancer because the tumors can become resistant to the therapy. Fortunately, new research has found that prostate tumor growth may be stopped.
The UT Southwestern Medical Center's research team has discovered a source that may be the key to slowing the growth of a prostate cancer tumor. It has been found that by blocking one of the steps that aids in tumors producing androgens, growth could be slowed or even stopped. This is an enzymatic step that allows the tumor to continue developing.
This discovery could potentially lead to improved therapy for patients who are suffering with end-stage prostate cancer. At this stage, the cancer is incurable. The researchers will now work on developing a drug that targets the enzyme responsible for aiding in the tumor's growth.
