Protecting Soldiers’ Mental Health Before the Battle

During the months of rigorous physical training our soldiers undertake as they prepare for deployment, one critical assessment is often lacking: mental health. While we may prepare these brave men and women for combat physically, they are often mentally unprepared for the stresses and issues they will endure emotionally.

With an increased program of mental health evaluation, screening, and care prior to deployment, our armed forces can determine whether or not a soldier will need additional support for psychological concerns while on active duty. This preventive care can help minimize the occurrence of later disability from mental conditions such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, anxiety, and other disabling mental conditions.

Psychological disorders are among the highest rates of disabling conditions that veterans suffer when returning from active duty.
These disorders can cause declines in quality of life, increases in suicide rates, and many other serious consequences to the daily lives of our veterans.

As the acknowledgement of these post-service conditions rises, more is being done to help reduce the occurrence of mental disorders. With adequate pre-screening and evaluation of soldiers before they deploy to active combat situations, the armed forces hopes to minimize the risk of a new generation of veterans suffering from psychological trauma.

The mental health of our troops is a matter that should be monitored at all stages of a soldier's life: enlisting, active duty, and retirement as a veteran. A disabling mental disorder can develop at any stage without proper psychological care, leaving many veterans unable to cope with retirement from active duty.
