November 30, 2010 - Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) doctors have noticed something about many of their patients with cardiovascular disease over the last couple of years. A vast majority of their patients include post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among the list of ailments from which they are suffering. This begs the question: does PTSD increase the likeliness of the heart disease?
A study recently purports to answer that question. The veterans who took part in the study provided the answer many doctors have been seeking, that PTSD is listed as an ailment in patients with heart disease is not a coincidence. PTSD goes far beyond being solely a mental health disease. PTSD affects the person's entire body and speeds up the course of development cardiovascular disease takes in the human body.
The researchers performed follow-ups on almost 300,000 veterans who had received treatment in various Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers. Because veterans with PTSD had higher rates of death than veterans without PTSD in that time period, researchers concluded PTSD could be used to predict death independent of any risk factors that have been acknowledged for cardiovascular disease being present.
Essentially, for those veterans suffering from PTSD there is hope for staving off cardiovascular disease from becoming a reality. Early detection and treatment of these veterans may save their lives.
