Qualifying for Extra Help With Medicare Prescription Costs

A new aspect of Social Security law may help qualified candidates receive more assistance with Medicare prescription drug costs. The recently enacted change to Social Security law is intended to provide extra assistance to people who meet certain qualifications. Specifically, those who wish to qualify for the additional Medicare assistance must meet the prescribed resource and income limits.

There are two changes in the new Medicare law which should help more people to meet the requirements for assistance:

  • The cash value of a life insurance policy no longer counts as a resource for the Social Security or Medicare recipient
  • The Social Security administration no longer counts the money you receive from outside sources for use in household expenses - such as food and rent - as a source of income

Another change to Medicare law enables those who apply for extra help to also apply for the Medicare Savings Program. These state programs are intended to help Medicare recipients with Medicare costs, including Medicare Part B premiums.

These changes are examples of how Social Security laws can evolve in ways which impact Medicare benefits for the elderly and disabled.

If you or your loved is suffering from a severe physical or mental disability, you should contact a Social Security Disability lawyer immediately to learn about your rights and determine eligibility.
